Toes in the water: start-up resource package – 2020

This online resource pack introduces school leaders and staff to the why, what, and how of developing  powerful learners. The big picture frameworks of Building Better Learners are explained and illustrated with practical ideas. The materials will enable schools to get their collective heads around a learning centred approach to teaching and begin to try out some of the ideas in practice. It will set schools off on shifting the learning culture to helping students become better at learning.

For leaders this culture shift means being able to lead innovation. For teachers it amounts to significant changes in practice. For students it amounts to enabling them to become confident lifelong learners. There’s no insignificance here; no little tweaks; no golden flecks; no trivia. Taking on improving learners’ command of the learning process is a substantial but hugely worthwhile undertaking for everyone involved.

Modules 1 & 2  are written for senior leaders and consider the strategic change management issues of taking on and sustaining this innovation.

Modules 3 & 4 are written for all staff and explain the frameworks of learning habits for better learning together with practical ideas for how to make a start on developing these in the classroom.

Module 5 briefly explores the challenges of changing classroom practice and ways of doing this successfully. This section explains follow-on online programmes for schools that want to take the approach further than this resource pack allows.
