Primary CPD 2022

Our core programme is guided by best practice thinking in professional development; we blend online information with teacher learning teams and classroom based enquiries. Our researched content is made available for teachers to access online. Teachers discuss the content and plan changes they want to make in their classrooms with learning team colleagues. This rhythmic way of learning together organises a consistent school-wide approach to developing students’ learning behaviours.

How Professional Learning Teams work

About our Professional Learning teams approach

The modules of our various courses are simply the online content aspect of the blended learning programme which, when blended with Professional Learning Teams and Classroom Based Enquiries is guaranteed to help the school achieve the desired outcomes.
A Professional Learning Team is the support mechanism in the blended learning cycle. Time for PLTs will need to be built into the rhythm of the school’s meeting cycle. They offer teachers a safe, supportive space to discuss and explore the craft of the classroom enabling teachers to learn with and from their colleagues – to become, in John Hattie’s words, ‘learners of their own teaching’.
Classroom Based Enquiries are the third aspect of the blended learning programme. Classroom based enquiries involve changing aspects of teachers’ practice in order to develop student learning behaviours. Enquiries are likely to involve them in making small changes in the classroom, monitoring the impact of those changes, and sharing these outcomes at the next team meeting for professional discussion. Most schools tend to blend these 3 aspects into a 4-week/monthly cycle.

The core programme; Building Better Learners

Phase 1.Engaging …

Phase 2. Establishing…

Linking the whole programme together…

On-line resource – Finding Learning Power is a resource, not a course, that helps staff take a serious look at their students as learners. It forms the start and basis of our whole school development programme. What are your students like as learners…now? This unusual yet vital and urgent question is the stimulus for this resource; a practical tool to help teachers and schools uncover their students’ learning character and use this, usually hidden and unknown information, as the very basis for developing and strengthening them as learners throughout the programme,

But if you’re not sure, there are tasters to try…

There are two online taster resources. Both will give teachers a feel for putting learning power into practice, although they are very different in style.

  • Re-energising your learners’ resilience

tackles perseverance, possibly one of the most important learning behaviours, in some depth. It is a school-wide online resource kit to help teachers re-energise, revive and develop students’ emotional learning behaviours. A companion resource for school leaders is designed to help them support teachers in making the most of the resource.

  • nion resource Leading Finding Learning Power is the companion resource for headteachers and senior leaders

Narrowing the learning gaps

The resource lays out, in booklet form, a highly practical introduction to how teachers and schools might tackle the post pandemic questions around students’ performance. It’s based around two main pieces of content:

  • a set of tools — ‘Learning Charts’ — for plotting an individual student’s learning behaviours; and
  • an extensive ‘Catalogue of Ideas’ for teachers to apply in their efforts to nurture their students’ learning behaviours.

This swift, focused start for schools that are sympathetic to the aim of building powerful learners, but have no previous experience. It will also help reinvigorate teachers’ use of learning power, where it may have waned in the pandemic.

Both these resources will enable staff to become aware, or re-aware, of the purpose and value of helping pupils to build their learning habits.

The core programme

use a rich picture of their students’ learning behaviours, rather than simply attainment, to underpin their approach to helping them improve, develop or catch up on their learning.

The resource that drives the programme..Finding Learning Power

Finding Learning Power … a resource, not a course, that helps staff take a serious look at their students as learners and forms the start and basis of our whole school development programme. What are your students like as learners…now?

  • What sort of a learning character do they have?
  • Has it changed, can it be moulded?
  • What are your students’ current learning strengths or limitations?
  • Which learning behaviours do your students need to strengthen…now?
  • Does learning character play any part in influencing the attainment of higher vs lower performing students?

These unusual yet vital and urgent questions form the stimulus for this resource; a practical tool to help teachers and schools uncover their students’ learning character and use this, usually hidden and unknown information, as the very basis for developing and strengthening them as learners.

The resource Finding Learning Power offers teachers and the school:

  • a manageable set of tools to enable them uncover, collect and analyse information about their students’ learning character
  • an outline of the research, value, makeup and growth of  learning character
  • a spreadsheet package to help schools monitor, evaluate and manage their students’ learning behaviour data.

These tools help the school discover and analyse students’ learning behaviours and use this information as an essential starting point for helping students become better learners. In other words this resource will help staff and the whole school to:

Phase 1. Engaging

Playing the Learning Power Game

Playing the Learning Power Game is the online content aspect of the blended learning programme which, when blended with Professional Learning Teams and Classroom Based Enquiries is guaranteed to help the school achieve the desired outcomes.

The content aspect of the blended learning programme is designed to help leaders and teachers explore questions such as:

  • How and where do we make a start on ensuring ‘learning power’ becomes a practical reality in the school?
  • What are the key learning behaviours really about; how might we explain them to students; how do we help them to progress?
  • What’s the best way to get a learning language going across the school?
  • How can we create learning friendly classrooms where learning behaviours are consciously used and developed?
  • How might we celebrate the development of learning habits.
