Playing the learning power game 2022-unit images2

1. What do we mean by learning power?

Please note: many of the ideas and exercises in Unit 1 may have been introduced to you in our introductory training sessions or those provided by your school leaders. If so, please use Section 1 as a revision exercise to remind yourself of the big ideas and your own feelings about them. You are likely to find some deeper material here than in the face to face training sessions.

What do we mean by learning power?

This first unit explores: the nature of and beliefs about learning; the learning behaviours of highly effective learners; and the types of classroom culture within which these behaviours can grow and flourish. These ideas are explored in 3 separate sections.

In the 3 sections of unit 1 you will find:

  • background research on dispositional learning
  • the two interlinking frameworks that underpin building better learners
  • examples of how the two frameworks work in practice
    • the four foundational learning behaviours to make a start on
    • the essential aspects of classroom culture that can make a difference
    • links with classroom based enquiry research

Navigating the content in the following 3 sections

  • In each of the sections you will find notes and tips to help you gain a coherent feel for how the material fits together and applies to your classroom practice.
  • Ideas in this module may take you into a new way of thinking about learning.
  • Make notes of your musings
  • Take it slowly and try to avoid any inclination to skim through the whole resource.

  • Keep any completed downloads and take them to your first Professional Learning Team meeting.

To explore the 3 sections:

  • Access them via the Unit Navigation box (top right of this screen).
  • Tackle them in order, and undertake all of the suggested activities as you go..
  • These 3 sections are the essential preparation for your first Professional Learning Team meeting.

3 sections to explore:

Building Better Learners – what is it? should it be done? how could it be done? what does it look and feel like?

Exploring the Supple Learning Mind – what are the building blocks of effective learning? where are my students now? where could we start?

Exploring the Teachers’ Palette – what are the three types of classroom culture? where is my classroom now? what might I do differently in the future?
