Senior leader resource: Helping teachers to make best use of the culture units

There are five units in this suite of units for teachers (plus this resource for senior leaders).

The first unit is an introduction to classroom culture and an invitation to teachers to reflect on their own classroom culture.

This is followed by four units dealing with shifting to a learning friendly classroom culture:

• Helping your learners to . . . take responsibility for their own learning

• Helping your learners to . . . develop a language of learning

• Helping your learners to . . . learn about learning

• Helping your learners to . . . celebrate and value their learning behaviours

Start with the unit ‘Helping teachers to understand classroom culture’

This introductory unit considers three types of classroom culture – teacher focused, learner focused, and learning focused – and readies the way to explore how teachers might create an enabling classroom culture through practising some of the teaching ideas in the 4 main units.

Go to the section ‘Getting Started’ in the unit navigation box (top right of this screen) for guidance on how you might support teachers to get going.

And once this has been read, digested and discussed, move teachers on to the first of the 4 main units –

‘Helping your learners to take responsibility for their own learning’. Again, guidance in how to do this is the second item in the unit navigation box.
